The Gremlins Present: A Night of Live Music at the Lost Church
In exploring our passion and love for live music, my friend Sina and I embarked on a quest to organize a concert in San Francisco. Since Sina was a computer programmer, we decided to take an analytical approach to booking the artist for the concert by applying an algorithm that crawled the social graph of who artists followed on Soundcloud. This allowed us to see the “virtual scenes” of which artists followed which artists we allowed us to efficiently map out the local music scene. Furthermore, by keeping track of who follows who, we were able to find up-and-comers who do not yet have many followers but nevertheless have a vote of confidence from the community. You can read more about the technical process here.
We booked a sold out night show at The Lost Church in San Francisco, a cozy theatre in The Mission with capacity for 75 people with two talented local acts: Foxtails Brigade and Baby’s Day Out. It was an intimate setting, with attendees sitting shoulder to shoulder, taking it all in. The gathering acted as a tribute to those lost in the Oakland Ghostship fire that devastated the Bay Area just a week before the show. It was a joyful moment of bringing community together with music.
